The issue will cover a broad range of topics related to management in the laboratory. Risk, Error and Uncertainty: Laboratory Quality Management in the Age of Metrology, An Issue of the Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, E-Book.
The preface states that this book provides a simple, but comprehensive, guide on how to produce data on biologic variation, locate them in available literature, and use them in everyday laboratory practice. The book comprises six chapters: “The Nature of Biological Variation”, “Quality Specifications”, “Changes in Serial Results”, “The Utility of Population-based Reference Values”, “Other Uses of Data on Biological Variation”, and “Next Steps”.
These are complemented by an index, a four-page glossary, and two supplements entitled “Data on Components of Biological Variation” and “Quality Specifications for Precision, Bias, and Total Error allowable”. The author, widely recognized as a leader in the development and publication of information concerned with the assessment of biologic variation, explains simply, logically, and lucidly how to determine within- and between-individual biologic variation. He also explains how these measurements can be applied to set quality specifications for a variety of applications, including allowable error in analytical methods and allowable difference between methods. Furthermore, he shows how significant differences between serial results in an individual (the reference change value) may be calculated, how these may be applied to develop delta-checks for within-patient measurements, and how the reference change value may be used to demonstrate that laboratory data have changed significantly from one occasion to another. Although few details of studies on biologic variability in patients with disease are provided, the possible pitfalls of applying the concept of reference change values to monitoring acutely ill patients are described. Nevertheless, the author has pioneered the inclusion of information related to significant changes on the reports from his laboratory.

What could the author have done to make this intriguing book even better? He could have linked some of the statements that he makes attributed to “the literature” to the specific authors and references, thus facilitating follow-up by the readers who should have been stimulated by this interesting book.
If a subsequent edition is published, the author might want to clarify the subtitle on page 107 of “Indices of Individuality and Diagnosis”, which could be misinterpreted to imply yet another index, conceptually wonderful, but nonexistent. The author provides an excellent, readable, and concise overview of biologic variability, of which most clinicians are oblivious and which most laboratorians ignore in daily practice. Yet the solid, statistically based, derived parameters, such as reference change values, provide a framework for enhanced interpretation of laboratory data and could lead to evidence-based applications for monitoring the clinical status of patients, an area where the clinical laboratory could make a substantial contribution to the current vogue of determining evidential applications in medicine.
